Our Belgian correspondent Joline Vermeulen is in town and introduces us to some wicked songs from her beloved country.
“Breathe You In My Dreams” – Trixie Whitley
Trixie Whitley sure is one of the most authentic multi-instrumentalists ever born and raised in Belgium. This song emphasizes her versatile nature, as she perfectly succeeds in harmonizing the rough- and tenderness of her soul voice. Such a pity she chose New York City over my hometown Ghent.
“Isabellade” – BeraadGeslagen
If there’s one band in my country that creates a universe of its own on stage, it must be BeraadGeslagen. They usually compose transcending electrojazz, which makes “Isabellade” the closest to Flemish pop culture the two musicians will ever get.
“Mood Swing Baby” – Absynthe Minded
This Absynthe Minded song never gets outdated. To me, it’s uncomplicated jazz at its best. Please do me a favour and listen to the violin part carefully.
“Tout Oublier” – Angèle feat. Roméo Elvis
These siblings have found their own way in the Belgian and international pop and hip hop scene, but strenghten one another’s energy when they join forces. With “Tout Oublier” they shed an ironic though accurate light on millennial issues and life.
“Mad About You” – Hooverphonic
“Mad About You” is one of the few Belgian songs you just couldn’t dislike. It’s an actual and honest masterpiece, reaching one climax after another.
